Introduction To Hybrid Cars

by Joseph Then

Let’s face it; we need to do our part to save the environment. Well, if you own a car or have heard the news, there is something called hybrid cars? What exactly is a hybrid car? Do you know? Well, if you don’t, do yourself a favour and read on.

A hybrid vehicle generally, is a vehicle that uses two or more distinct power sources to propel. There are certain common pwer sources they are: on-board rechargeable energy storage system (RESS) and a fueled power source, air or human powered bicycle with electric motor or gas engine.

Most hybrid cars are referred to as hybrid-electric vehicle or HEV. Usually, a HEV uses combustion and electric motors to proper the vehicle. I bet you don’t know what I am talking about. It’s okay.

Let me tell you. HEV is a vehicle which combines a conventional propulsion system with an on-board rechargeable energy storage system. Why combine? Simple, it is to achieve better fuel economy.

HEVs are more expensive (the so-called “hybrid premium”) than traditional ICE vehicles (ICEV), due to extra batteries, more electronics and in some cases other design considerations. The trade-off between higher initial cost and lower fuel costs (often referred to as the payback period) is dependent on usage .Traditional economy vehicles may result in a lower direct cost for many users (before consideration of any externality).

Why would people want to drive a hybrid car? The answer is very obvious. I cannot find a better way to answer this; we have one planet, why not protect it. So, other than the benefit of being environmentally friendly, what are the other benefits. We’ll come to that later. In the mean while, you have to trust me on this; hybrid cars are fun to drive.

I am sure you are dying to know the other benefits of driving a hybrid car and I am sure I have to do better to convince you that a hybrid car is much better than a conventional car.

Other than being environmentally friendly, a owning a hybrid car is easier on your pocket. Why? The fuel consumption is much lesser than that of a conventional car. Overall, the maintenance of the car is so much cheaper than having a conventional car.

Ever thought of having a car that has a durability of a range rover and the style of a Lexus car? I know I would love to have that. Believe it or not, a hybrid car is very durable. The cost of maintaining the gasoline engine and brakes are close to nothing. The batteries do not have to be replaced. You do the math and tell me how much you save.

So, do you want to drive a hybrid car? Well, I have an answer for that. Within a decade, it is estimated that the market will increase its production of hybrid cars to three million. Toyota, the most popular hybrid car maker will increase production to a million in a shorter time frame.

Now that you are armed with this knowledge, I suggest that you should atleast consider getting a hybrid car. If you cannot afford it noe, you can get it in the future. Remember, we have to do our part to save the planet.
