How Do I Use Wordpress to Create an eCommerce Website?

May 31st, 2010 by travelwell

Wordpress is widely known as a blogging platform, but the reality is it is a very powerful Content Management System (CMS) which is capable of doing much, much more. With the emergence of the internet economy as a significant component of the real-world retailing sector combined with simple-to-use tools for creating a site, it is now within your reach to have an eCommerce site up and running within a few hours.

There are three things you are going to need:

• a domain name – this is web address which is entered into the internet browser so the user can navigate to your website;
•    Wordpress theme and software – Wordpress is free to use and download, as are many of the themes available (of which there are hundreds and probably thousands available), though you can pay for Wordpress themes or customization if you want it; and
•    A payment processor – this is a means for you to receive payment for the goods being sold.

Domain Name

Your domain name can be the one allocated by Wordpress but, though this is free it does not look professional and it do anything to help you create an online branding identity, which is very important.

You can typically source domain names very cheaply from sites such as GoDaddy or HostGator, but if you are looking for a name which contains very common or desired words or phrases, expect to pay a lot of money for the name.

Can I Use WordPress as a Static eCommerce Site?

May 19th, 2010 by travelwell

Wordpress is one of the most popular blogging platforms available, however many people don’t realize that Wordpress can be customized to provide a great eCommerce website. This requires some changes to the default settings which come with Wordpress when you first set your account up, but they can be achieved relatively easily.

In this article we are going to look at some of the practical issues which you can follow to establish a “static” website appearance and why Wordpress provides such a cost-effective platform for your commercial web activities.

Creating a “Static” Main Page

The initial Wordpress setting is for the front page to show the latest in your string of blog posts – Wordpress is a blogging platform first and this is what bloggers will usually want. For an eCommerce website you will probably want a fixed front page to avoid any confusion with customers on the site.

The first thing to do is to produce your static, front page – open Wordpress’ Dashboard, click on Pages and Add New – you will open a screen of the draft page to which you can add graphics, company logo, any headline or welcome message and also add a list of product categories.Customize the page to your requirements and then publish the page to the site.

We now need to set this page as the Default Page – return to the Dashboard and select Settings; below Reading Settings select the “Static Page” option but be careful that you also save a title for the page, e.g homepage.

How To Build My Own Website

October 28th, 2009 by travelwell

Create blog website was nothing new for me. Well, I have been involve with internet since school. Today, you can keep touch with friends via webpage and putting up post. Blogging, after all, is basically the new small talk. All in all,I was creating my own webpage before I could write a decent sentence. Nonetheless, none of my own websites were particularly technologically sophisticated – something that would get me in trouble eventually.

When I decided on creating my own business website to make money at home online, I thought there would be nothing to it. I just knew that it would be more complicated than creating my own website had been in the past. Most of my sites are simple and straight forward. Of course, people could post responses to some of my blogs and vote in online polls, but that was about it. It was all pretty straightforward, and it required no programming knowledge or experience at all. Based on this rationale, I figured out that I could create a business website without any problem. Well, how difficult can it be? It turn out that the process can be very tough! Well, making my own website for my business was one of the stupidest things that I have ever tried to do.
